Baptism is a public declaration of the decision I have made to follow Jesus. It is an outward expression of an inward decision and not a qualification for salvation. When I am baptized, I am identifying with Jesus’ death by being placed under the water and with his resurrection by being brought up out of the water, symbolizing a new creation. (Romans 6:4-10) So just as Jesus was put to death, I too am put to death to my old self, and just like Jesus was raised to life again, I too am raised to life again. The old is gone and the new has come. (2 Corinthians 5:17). I am getting baptized because I want to publicly declare that I believe in Jesus.
